Itosu Kai Karate Galway was founded in October 1991 and is situated in Creaven House a purpose built dojo in the Claddagh. The club caters for all, adults as well as children, whether you have studied a martial art before or just starting out in your karate experience. Itosu kai Galway aim to make training a positive and rewarding experience for every member. The club is part of Itosu kai karatedo asociation of Ireland and is also registered with ONAKAI (national governing body for karate in Ireland) and also the all Japan Itosu kai karatedo.
Kobudo (weaponery) is also taught in the club. Traditional weapons of Ryu Kyu (Okinawan)such as Bo staff, Tonfa, Nunchaku, Kama and Sai are taught.
Regular gradings help the karateka to progress to a higher level and a different belt colour. The club takes part in local, national, international and world championships.
Sensei Claire Harte 5th Dan Karate and 4th Dan Kobudo, is the Head instructor and founder of the club with over 30 years of Karate experience behind her and so far. Sensei Claire is the PRO for Itosu Kai Karatedo Ireland, is a Senior Consultant to Itosu ryu Karatedo International Federation (IKIF), she holds Level 1 Coach in Karate (Coaching Ireland)and a Jaudge A Certificate (ONAKAI). as well as all this she is a fully qualified Fitness Instructor and also a qualified Sports Injury Therapist.
